Spooky Things to Do in October Near the Nantahala River

Temperatures start getting chilly in October, but don’t let that stop you from rafting. We still have warm weather at about midday perfect for rafting with Carolina Outfitters. Fall colors are at their prettiest this time of year, so you will enjoy your trip down the river as you admire the Nantahala River foliage. As night falls, October offers some spooky fun for your Halloween entertainment.

Want an alternative to trick-or-treating? Scare-Okee is held on October 31st at the Oconaluftee Island Park in Cherokee, North Carolina. Enjoy a haunted house, trick-or-treating, pumpkin rolling, and a light show, along with food trucks. Fun for the whole family!

Pinhead’s Graveyard is for those of you who want a scarier experience. Less than an hour’s drive from Bryson City in Canton, NC, Pinhead’s Graveyard offers horror movie characters such as, Pinhead, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Art The Clown, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Jeepers Creepers, Pennywise, Otis, Victor Crowley  and many more in a haunted house setting. Darnell Farms in Bryson City, NC hosts a haunted corn maze in October. Pick your own pumpkin after a hayride to the pumpkin patch. Be sure and check back with their website to see the updates to what else they offer for fall and Halloween entertainment.

If you find yourself with some leisure time, about dusky dark (or full dark if you are braver) visit The Road to Nowhere on Lakeview Drive in Bryson City, NC for a spooky little walk. This scenic route takes you six miles into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park ending at a tunnel. Walk to the other end of the tunnel at midnight if you dare.
